When it comes to fashion trends, one thing is certain: nothing will ever be too new or too old. It’s all a continuous cycle and a reinvention of styles. So, if you are thinking of throwing a few horrible items out of your closet, think again! You may never know when they are going to be the biggest fashion hit.
2013 is just about that – reinventing some of those ’90’s trends and pulling off the funkiest looks. And making a comeback this year is the Varsity jacket, aka, “Letterman jacket”.

For so many high school and college students, the varsity jacket is traditionally a representation of pride and support for their schools. The jacket became a huge hit when Michael Jackson rocked it on and off stage back in the ‘80s. Now it’s re-living its glory days on runways and catwalks for Spring/Summer 2013/14 collections. The sporty, yet chic style of the varsity jacket was a huge success with Rag & Bone, Altuzarra, and Alexander Wang. Not to mention the number of celebrities wearing this comfy cool jacket: Rihanna (sporty urban style), Kim Kardashian (glam sexy urban) Taylor Swift (college sporty chic).

How to wear the varsity jacket look

To avoid looking ridiculous, we have curated some styling tips / ideas for your personal style inspiration.

-Sporty chic
The jacket may seem plain, sporty, and quite boyish, yet it is one of the most versatile piece you can have in your closet. Pairing it with simple sporty outfits (jeans, shorts, converse, ballet pumps, T-shirts, sweaters, baseball caps) can give you that boyish sporty chic style look.

-Edgy
For extra edgy look, pile on jewelry, or go for studded jackets, and if you’d like to give it a more girly vibe, play up your lips (red lips look amazing with this jacket giving it an urban touch; think Rihanna) or let your hair loose.

-Smart edgy for office
For a super smart edgy look, opt for pencil skirts, blouses or T-shirts, statement necklaces, super sexy heels and over-the-shoulders varsity jacket. For a more casual sophisticated look, switch the skirt with skinny trousers or boyfriend jeans. Shorts or mini skirts are amazing if you are aiming for sexy, and maxi skirts or dresses look feminine with this jacket. For extra edge, add a baseball cap and statement accessories. And remember… to get this chic sophisticated sporty look always go for heels!

Styling Tips

  • Have fun with your look and don’t take it too seriously
  • Make it your own… meaning wear colors / styles that works best for your figure
  • Own your look; be confident in your choices

We’ve all seen the fashion editors, photographers, bloggers, and stylists rocking the varsity jacket with heels. And loved it! So do just the same, just don’t forget your fantastic bag or over-sized clutch to complete your look.

Whether you love it or not the varsity jacket is a trend to try once and, if you ask me, a staple piece to consider for spring. It’s fun, cool, versatile, cozy, and super comfortable.

CHIME IN!
Will you ditch your leather jackets for a while and be a team player in that old school nostalgic varsity jacket? Are you game or not?

2012 Fall Trend: Oversize Look

by Dana Cristina

Ladies who ever said size does not matter couldn’t be more wrong! This autumn, fashion is all about one size: Oversize! Apparently, the one rule that never seemed to age in fashion (”dress according to your size”) is, well, out of style in 2012 Autumn/Winter trends. And you can also put aside your mothers’ and grandmothers’ advice of always wearing clothes that fit!

From coats to jumpers to cardigans to trousers, fashion is going up one too many sizes. Whether it’s the cold season requiring more layering or just a fashion craze, Fall 2012 will have women all bundled up in cocoon coats, sweaters with puffy sleeves, huge & eccentric collars or big skirts & dresses. It’s a bit of ‘90s Kate Moss meets ‘70s Farrah Fawcett: sexy slouchy shoulders, high waist large trousers, big blouses, huge cardigans, oversized coats, jackets or shirts! And you can go either way: towards grunge style (which alone is a big trend this season as well) or a more classic elegant one.

Starting up as a street trend, pretty much ignored for years, the oversized style has finally caught up with the fashion designers in their 2012 Fall/Winter collections. The runways were flooded with big coats, trousers, skirts, tops in so many looks, styles and designs that we feel it’s never been this good! Jil Sander honored the classic elegant woman in big & beautiful coats in his best collection so far. Gucci went for opulent drama in sexy big trousers.

Sportmax, Chloe, Balenciaga, Moschino all chose and praised the oversize this season. Though to some it may come across as an uninspired trend, hiding away the woman’s body – we should nonetheless keep an opened mind and experiment. Models and celebrities are always seen in street style photos going for comfy and ill- fitted rather than body-tight. Seen it in Rihanna, Claudia Schiffer or Miranda Kerr who loves the oversized cardigans and coats.

Sure it may take a while to see Kim Kardashian ditch her fitted outfits, but one can hope right? And if this style may not be your cup of tea – remember you can still rock it by keeping in mind a few tips: pair anything oversized with something tight; use a belt; and accessorize to jazz it up and make it feminine!

Fall is about letting go, braking rules and choosing big over small. Could it be that women have had too much of body fitted clothes? Maybe fashion is going for comfy this time. Or could it be that we are finally witnessing a fashion revolution: the decay of size zero?
