Ladies who ever said size does not matter couldn’t be more wrong! This autumn, fashion is all about one size: Oversize! Apparently, the one rule that never seemed to age in fashion (”dress according to your size”) is, well, out of style in 2012 Autumn/Winter trends. And you can also put aside your mothers’ and grandmothers’ advice of always wearing clothes that fit!
From coats to jumpers to cardigans to trousers, fashion is going up one too many sizes. Whether it’s the cold season requiring more layering or just a fashion craze, Fall 2012 will have women all bundled up in cocoon coats, sweaters with puffy sleeves, huge & eccentric collars or big skirts & dresses. It’s a bit of ‘90s Kate Moss meets ‘70s Farrah Fawcett: sexy slouchy shoulders, high waist large trousers, big blouses, huge cardigans, oversized coats, jackets or shirts! And you can go either way: towards grunge style (which alone is a big trend this season as well) or a more classic elegant one.
Starting up as a street trend, pretty much ignored for years, the oversized style has finally caught up with the fashion designers in their 2012 Fall/Winter collections. The runways were flooded with big coats, trousers, skirts, tops in so many looks, styles and designs that we feel it’s never been this good! Jil Sander honored the classic elegant woman in big & beautiful coats in his best collection so far. Gucci went for opulent drama in sexy big trousers.
Sportmax, Chloe, Balenciaga, Moschino all chose and praised the oversize this season. Though to some it may come across as an uninspired trend, hiding away the woman’s body – we should nonetheless keep an opened mind and experiment. Models and celebrities are always seen in street style photos going for comfy and ill- fitted rather than body-tight. Seen it in Rihanna, Claudia Schiffer or Miranda Kerr who loves the oversized cardigans and coats.
Sure it may take a while to see Kim Kardashian ditch her fitted outfits, but one can hope right? And if this style may not be your cup of tea – remember you can still rock it by keeping in mind a few tips: pair anything oversized with something tight; use a belt; and accessorize to jazz it up and make it feminine!
Fall is about letting go, braking rules and choosing big over small. Could it be that women have had too much of body fitted clothes? Maybe fashion is going for comfy this time. Or could it be that we are finally witnessing a fashion revolution: the decay of size zero?
